Story of The Month

Torn Apart by Neil O'Neil

Frank's bandages had only been off for two hours but he had to write down the malignant memories that had taken up residence in the last few days, standing in the way of any potentially pleasant thought. He was lucky to be alive…or was he? Picture of Soldiers Marching In Paris

Frank was a self-made man, now a multi-millionaire, but bankrupt in luck.
"Here's your pen and notebook Frank, but I think you should pack your bags, slow down and get yourself ready. It's a big day today and you need to be relaxed and fresh for Alice" said Janet, his nurse and new friend.
"I know…. I know Jan, but if I don't write this now, I 'm liable to take my ghosts with me…and that's something I don't need," he said, taking the notebook and pen, drawing his chair closer to the writing table, in the private suite at the San Bernardino Hospital.
"Guess you know what's best, but Alice is due at two and I know you, you'll leave everything to the last minute," Janet replied heading for the door.
  "Need anything else?"
"How about a bottle of whiskey and a blow job?" He quipped.
"Fuck you loser," she smiled and left the room. A week ago she couldn't have said that but he seemed to have made an amazing recovery in the last few days, especially emotionally.

Frank didn't waste time; even though he hadn't yet thought everything through, his thoughts were waiting to be released. Taking the pen, he starts his turbulent journey.

I have made the decision to clear my conscience and get on with my life, but first I must record the events of the last few weeks so that there is no misunderstanding

I haven't been the greatest father. I really believed all those years of work were for the benefit of my family and I have been driven, no obsessed, by my dream that one day we could all have the time to do the things families should do and want for nothing. I missed how important the small things were, like Jenny's first school play or Adrian's graduation. I know I should have been there to help him through his arrest for stealing John Logan's Ferrari, and when Jenny had her stomach pumped after her overdose. People say I am bright and astute but I have been a dumb shit when it came to my family and their obvious needs. Seems obvious now that it's too late.

As CEO I guess I put DataCom before everything else, me included. I kept convincing myself that after the next deal I would have a holiday and take everybody away and do all the catching up; make my family laugh and smile; make them love me. Well it never happened.

Maybe I should have woken up when Adrian was killed. I still blame myself for that. Maybe if I hadn't made money no object for him, he wouldn't have gotten into that entire street racing stuff.
